Q & A: Higher Education Act Print E-mail
Q: Is it true that teens who are convicted of a drug related offense (my son has twice been in a car where there was alcohol) are not allowed to borrow money for college?

A: The ban on student loans and federal grants only applies to drug offenses. It does not apply to alcohol offenses. A person can drink and drive and run over someone and still get school loans. But, if they get caught with just one joint they will be ineligible for school loans for at least a year (possibly more). For more information about the Higher Education Act, please see this article.
