Just4Teens is an innovative drug education DVD featuring the voices of young people, adults in recovery and prevention specialists. Rejecting the "Just Say No!" and fear-based messages so often used in schools and prevention programs, Just4Teens focuses on honest, open and respectful discussion with teens about their experiences and the realities of drugs and drug use today. The accompanying Facilitator's Guide provides thought-provoking questions and exercises to enhance group discussion, and offers related activities and resources that can be the basis for an entire unit of study on dealing with alcohol and other drugs.
Shaped by more than 70 teen focus groups participants as well as the young people on screen, Just4Teens is truly a video by and for youth!
A bonus section for parents, teachers and prevention specialists features adult experts sharing their experience and knowledge about what works (and what doesn’t) for effective drug education and prevention for young people today. Get the latest information from the experts.
DPA New Mexico will be conducting drug education and prevention trainings in 2009 and 2010 around the state. These hands-on trainings will assist educators and prevention specialists in learning how to use Just4Teens most effectively, and how to incorporate interactive drug prevention and education techniques into classroom and group settings. DPA New Mexico has played a leadership role in promoting effective programs and policies that address youth substance abuse. In October 2007, DPA New Mexico organized and hosted a two-day conference entitled, "Building Positive Communities: A Public Health Approach to Teen Methamphetamine Prevention." The conference was attended by more than 300 teachers, school health and juvenile justice professionals, counselors, community prevention specialists, and parents. The conference provided current information about addiction and drug use trends, "hands-on" workshops featuring the best practices in drug education, and opportunities for networking with colleagues from around the state.
